Villanova Students Help The Joy of Sox
Stuffing envelopes, painting walls, putting together shelves and handwriting notes – what have these go to do with The Joy of Sox’s mission of providing joy to those experiencing homelessness by giving them new socks?
It’s all about Villanova University giving back on their annual St Thomas of Villanova Day of Service. On Saturday September 21 about 35 students will help The Joy of Sox at two locations – on campus in The Connelly Center, and at their warehouse in Phoenixville, PA.
On campus the students will be putting together a mail out to approximately 400 schools around the Philadelphia, PA; Wilmington, DE and Trenton and Camden, NJ areas. The purpose of this mailing is to suggest that the schools consider holding a sock drive as a community service project. It’s can also serve as an opportunity for the teachers to talk to the students about the plight of those experiencing homelessness. The goal of the mail out is to collect 30,000 pairs of new socks!
Another group of students will be in the warehouse cleaning up, painting walls, putting together shelves, moving pallets of donated socks, conducting an inventory and sorting and bagging socks. At the end of the day “The Vault,” as they refer to the facility, should be looking good and have plenty of bags of socks on new shelves ready to be distributed to facilities around the area and across the country.
